So many people believe witchcraft to be all black eyeshadow and pointy hats and that spell casting is all imaginary wands and hocus pocus! but that really couldn't be further from the truth. The term Witch is an umbrella for many beliefs and religions, most dating back to Pagan times and certainly isn't exclusive to women either, there are plenty of male witches, the thing that most have in common is a deep love of nature and the understanding that magic comes from within.
The common impression of spell work is a misconception, certainly there are those that like to cast an illusion of mysticism around their beliefs and spell work, but I believe that most of us are just incredibly down to earth nature lovers. The reality of spell casting for me is definitely not very mystical at all, it's more like burnt fingertips and candle wax and sometimes I'm amazed I still have eyebrows, but the spell still works more often than not because I am focused.
You see, spell work is actually very straightforward and you can perform it with nothing more elaborate than a simple tealight candle, it is all about focused intention and the belief that you can bring about change or a solution to an issue you have. I often compare it to meditation or to the practice of creating a vision board – with both you place your sole focus on them for a relatively short period of time, if you are manifesting something then you imagine it in your minds eye and exactly how it will feel once you achieve it. I like to do this as I gaze at the candle flame and its aura, almost as if in trance. Other ingredients, such as particular colours, crystals and herbs help bring more energy to the spell, their individual properties add a little something extra that helps things along. I also believe that the very ritual itself – the setting out of ingredients, the anointing and lighting of candles etc – is important because it helps get you in the right head space and aids your focus. Many of us like to call upon a particular deity believing that their energy also adds to the mix, I particularly like doing this when I'm asking for healing for my dog.
This is a very simplistic way of looking at spell work but it forms the basis of what I believe – others may disagree, but that is the beauty of witchcraft, it is completely individual with no rule book. It is also very much what I keep in mind when creating my own spell kits to sell, I keep them simple and straightforward so that they are suitable for absolute beginners and seasoned withes alike – I aim to take a little of the mystery out of spell work and show people that they can do this successfully themselves and with very little expense. I'm trying to make magic practical and accessible to all.
