When we think about love we tend to focus on romantic love or perhaps love of family and close friends, what we don't tend to focus on is self love, yet this is arguably the most important love of all. Why is it that self love is often the hardest to find, why are we always so critically hard on ourselves and our outward appearance?
Society seems to have become obsessed with outside appearances and generally neglects inner beauty – this message can be so damaging, especially to the young or those who already feel less than perfect. When did society and the media become so shallow? It's time that we stopped comparing ourselves and stopped looking so critically in the mirror, it's time that we all celebrated our differences – both inner and outer – that is what makes us humans so interesting and attractive. Wouldn't it be boring if we were all “Martini" people and all shared the same opinions and way of life – that brings to mind the Stepford Wives films where the women are clones and all look perfect but are completely empty inside. Personally I love a face that shows character and life experience, so why do so many choose plastic surgery and botox over character and ageing?
I believe it is time that we all looked within and started to acknowledge the beauty of our characters, of our minds and of our souls, not just our outer shell, and started to spread the message of self love and self worth. I have battled with this demon myself, I have looked in the mirror and not been happy with what I've seen, I have felt unworthy, unlovable, but I chose to look into that shadow side of my personality and I worked on it, told it that it was worthy of love and blessings of every kind, that it was beautiful – that I am beautiful. Is it time for you to do the same?
